MY CO-HOST IS DEAD WRONG ABOUT COLLEGE FOOTBALL! HERE’S WHY.

My co-host, PGHIronMike put out a blog earlier today titled “College Football Playoff Expansion Talks Are Actively Ruining The Game!” Let me start by saying, I love the guy. But this take is just so wrong that it’s painful. 

First thing’s first, I HIGHLY doubt the expansion is going to a 24-team format. If we are being intellectually honest, the next step is 16 teams, and I honestly don’t see that as a bad thing. 

16 makes perfect sense. No more weird byes. 8 Home games for 1-8. The format then looks the same as the 12-team playoff’s second round for the second round and on. 

I will concede one point that IronMike hit on the head. No one wants to see Tulane and JMU get killed in round one, but I also never wanted there to be a G-5 spot in the playoff to begin with. The “highest rated conference champion” language has got to go. If it’s going to be 16, then make it the top 16 teams. 1-16, no conference championship stuff at all. There will still be blowouts, but it will feel a lot more like the teams that are there earned their spot. If you want to make it as a G-5 team, schedule P5 teams as your non-con.

Here’s my question for IronMike. Are you actually a Pitt fan? Because if you are, then playoff expansion should be a positive thing for you, not a negative. Pitt is not EVER going to be a top 4 team at the end of a season, but they certainly could find themselves in the top 16. Screw tradition, I want a chance. 

Playoff expansion gives hope to all of us fans out there of teams that no one saw as contenders just a few years ago. The 10-seed was in the National Championship last season. The 8-seed won it the year before. So tell me, Mike, what’s the number you want to see in the playoff? I think 16 is perfect, and where we will end up settling at the end of all of this. 24 is probably too much, but if it gets Pitt in, we both need to sit down, shut up, and H2P.
